When I was little, my mum used to tell me that freckles were a sign of beauty; of course, now that I'm older I know they're just tiny little bits of melanin beneath the skin which create areas that are slightly different colour than your natural skin tone. Freckles can appear on all types of skin tone, but they are most common on lighter skin tones belonging to people of northern European origin. Most people with freckles find that they darken or multiply when they are exposed to the sun, and it's advised that anyone with freckles should make sure they use a daily sunscreen.
