Acne is one of the most common facial skin conditions, affecting  up to 80% of people in the UK in their teen years, according to the NHS website. Fortunately, most people grow out of it, with just 5% of sufferers dealing with breakouts beyond the age of 25, but even once it’s gone acne can leave behind unpleasant scars. Fortunately, there are things that you can do to minimise the appearance of acne scarring, and we’ve got a few tips for you here:

Exfoliate with AHAs

AHAs, or Alpha-Hydroxy Acids, are naturally derived acids often from fruits, which gently exfoliate the skin by dissolving the top layer of dead cells and improving the skin’s texture. Elemis Dynamic Resurfacing Gel Mask contains high levels of AHAs which help reduce sebum flow by gently resurfacing and reducing the accumulation of keratin, improving the appearance of acne scars exponentially.

Use Sunscreen

Allowing scars to be exposed to the sun will cause darkening which will make your scar appear even more noticeable. Applying sunscreen when you go out, even when it’s not sunny outside, will protect your skin and stop your scars from darkening – opt for a broad spectrum, oil-free formula like Dermalogica Oil Free Matte SPF30 which will give you decent protection without messing up the delicate balance of oil in your skin.

Stock Up on Vitamin C

Vitamin C works wonders on the complexion; as well as making the complxion clearer and less pigmented, it reduces inflammation and fights free radicals. Decleor Extreme Brightening Essence is a targeted 30-day treatment system which uses pure vitamin C to regulate the skin, reduce areas of scarring and pigmentation and soothes the skin from irritants. It’s perfect to use on complexions which suffer with scaring and will show an improvement after just 30 days.

Reach for Rosehip

Rosehip is another great botanical ingredient which can help the battle against acne scarring. Rosehip is a natural anti-inflammatory which can help to reduce the appearance of scars and anti-oxidant benefits which increase cell-renewal and healing. Elemis Smart Cleanse Micellar Water contains rosehip and is the perfect gentle cleanser for scarred and potentially sensitive skin.

Soothe Your Skin

Many people who’ve suffered acne in the past will still have sensitive skin and although breakouts of acne don’t happen any more, over-sensitised skin can react in other ways, so it’s important to use products which keep it in check. Elemis Herbal Lavender Repair Mask in made with a soothing kaolin clay base and infused with lavender which reduces inflammation and reduces scarring, making it perfect in this scenario.

Detox with Pure Beauty

Dermalogica Daily Cleansing Shampoo

It’s not just your diet and drinking habits that might need an overhaul after the excess of Christmas and New Year, your skin might be in need of a detox too.

By looking at your diet, sleep routine and exercise, your should get your skin in shape, but today we are going to highlight some fantastic products that could help you glow once again.

While our bodies are hidden under jumpers and jeans, our faces are on constant show and are the first place to exposure tiredness. We love the Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant which is activated by water and day by day it helps bring skin back to life. Papain, Salicylic Acid and Rice Enzymes work together to smooth the skin and accelerate cell renewal while Bearberry, Aspergillus, Grapefruit and Liquorice deal with pigmentation. Using the super-soothing blend of Green Tea, Ginkgo and Colloidal Oatmeal as part of an ongoing beauty routine, means you will calm inflammation and your skin will be clear and refreshed.

Late nights can be hidden with concealer but if you really want to get to grips with your delicate eye contour area, the Decleor Hydrotenser Anti-Fatigue Eye Serum is just the ticket. This powerful hydro-tensor wakes up and boosts the eye area, by smoothing and moisturising the skin. This is an intense treatment, high in Hyaluronic Acid, that will make your eyes look as smooth and relaxed, as if you’d have a really good night’s sleep.

Cellulite can be a sign that you need to detox, and one way to get things started is by using the Elemis Cellutox Active Body Oil. Sea Buckthorn, Sea Fennel, Lemon and Juniper essential oils have been blend to create a power house body detox that we can’t get enough of. The oil can be used alone or as part of a full anti-cellulite and body cleansing programme, either way we think you will love it. Using the oil daily, after bathing or showering, will help smooth the appearance of cellulite, break down the build-up of toxins caused by poor diet, stress and lack of exercise as well as boost a post-Christmas sluggish system.

A really brilliant way to detoxify your skin, is with a regular application of the Dermalogica Charcoal Rescue Masque. This increasingly popular treatment can be used on all skin types and the fast acting formula revives tired, lacklustre, dull skin and leaves it looking light and fresh.

If you want to really stimulate your skin, investing in the Elemis Body Detox Skin Brush will get you top marks. The natural cactus bristles not only exfoliate away dead cells but the action stimulates lymph flow so that toxins are flushed away and with improved circulation your skin will look flawless.

Dull, lank, lifeless hair is another indication that you need to slow down. We love the Dermalogica Daily Cleansing Shampoo and how the nourishing, sulphate-free formula makes our hair healthy and shiny every day. Infused with a blend of essential oil blend that invigorates the senses, when used in conjunction with the Dermalogica Daily Conditioning Rinse, you’ll be amazed at the change, and the compliments.

Detox Your Body for the New Year

Detox Your Body for the New Year

Royalty-free image

We all tend to over-do things between Christmas and New Year, consuming far too much in the way of rich foods and alcohol and having a ‘January Detox’ is an almost yearly occurance to try to undo all the excesses of December. Here at Pure Beauty, we also think that having a skin detox is a great idea, giving our skin time to recover too, as the overindulgance of the festive season can take it’s toll on our complexion. Here are five of the best products for detoxing your skin:

Elemis Body Detox Skin Brush (with Bag)

This is probably our favourite detox product of all because it literally brushes away the top layer of skin, removing the cells which have been exposed to all of the environmental pollutants of the festive season. The natural cactus bristles help to reduce the appearance of cellulite, keep your lymphatic system flowing properly and give your skin its glow back.

Decleor Essential Cleansing Milk

This facial cleansing milk from Decleor has a light feel which cleanses the skin efficiently, and also contains green tea water which is known to remove toxins from the skin and leave you with a brighter, clearer complexion. It contains sweet almond oil so that it doesn’t strip away essential moisture and neroli oil to give a rich, sweet fragrance.

Dermalogica Charcoal Rescue Masque

Charcoal is a brilliant ingredient for detoxifying the skin as it literally draws impurities out of the pores as it dries. This masque is a multi-purpose treatment which will detoxify, brighten and invigorate your skin, turning a dull, lacklustre complexion into a brightened, renewed visage. It’s great for people with excess oil production too, as the charcoal will absorb excess sebum and help to rebalance the skin.

Elemis Cellutox Active Body Oil

This body oil is intended to help your internal system in many ways, prompting a detox from the inside out. Massaging your body with this oil will help to combat the build-up of toxins caused by poor diet, stress and lack of exercise, help to boost a sluggish system and eliminate lethargy and can even help with constipation by rubbing into the tummy and lower back area. It’s perfect for this time of year when we rarely exercise, eat far too much and need help to get everything moving again.

Decleor Essential Tonifying Lotion

This toner is part of the same range as the cleansing milk we recommended above and contains the same green tea water and neroli oil to detox the skin while adding a delightful, nourishing fragrance. This is a professional-grade toner with a fresh sparkling fragrance which balances the skin’s natural pH and leaves skin feeling beautifully refreshed, revitalised and re-hydrated.

Perfect Your Pout this Winter

Perfect Your Pout this Winter

There’s absolutely no doubt about the fact that big pouts are IN at the moment, but unless you’re going for Kardashian-style lip filling injections, you may feel like your lips leave you feeling a little bit flat. There are, however, a few things you can do to make your pout look fuller without needing to plump them up surgically, and we’ve got five things you can do for a fraction of the price (and pain!):

Lips which are covered in dry skin often look tighter and smaller, so it stands to reason that getting rid of dry skin is a good first step to putting some oomph back in your lips. Dermalogica Exfoliating Face Brush is intended for use over your whole face, but concentrate a few extra moments on your lips to keep them flake-free. It will also improve circulation which will also add volume to your lips.

Keeping your lips moisturised is another obvious way to keep your lips as plump as possibe. Many people use petroleum jelly on their lips by default, but these actually dry your lips out more because not only are petroleum products drying, but they also act as a barrier cream which keeps moisture out. Elemis Lip Revive is made from white bees wax which actively nourishes and moisturises the skin white peppermint oil helps to add volume to the lips.

Use a Base

When you apply your foundation or base, make sure you apply it to your lips too as this will blur the lip line and allow you to over-line your lips, giving them a larger appearance. It can take some practice to get right, but once you’ve mastered it, you’ll be able to make it look totally natural. We recommend a Dermalogica Sheer Tint which will give your skin a natural wash of colour and help you to blend the colour of your lips into the surrounding skin.

Avoid Dark Lipstick

We’re not sure how it works or the science behind it, but it’s a generally widely accepted piece of knowledge that dark lipsticks make your mouth look much smaller, even if you have a substantial pout in the first place. Nude or paler colours tend to make your lips look much bigger and glossier colours will usually look better than mattes.

Highlight Your Cupid’s Bow

This is a trick that any make-up artist worth their salt uses and it’s easy as pie to do. Take a tiny dab of highlighter on a soft, rounded brush and dab it on your  cupid’s bow (that’s the arch of your lips directly beneath your nose). It creates a flash of shimmer which somehow makes your mouth look much fuller.
