We all produce sebum, which is necessary for the protection of our skin; these oils and lipids are designed to create a protective barrier against moisture-loss and potential infections. When skin produces excess sebum it can create a shiny sheen and interfere with efficient skin renewal. Too much sebum can prevent dead or old skin cells from shedding, causing them to clog pores and eventually leading to blemishes and a dull complexion.
An oily complexion can still lack moisture, however. High temperatures, harsh skincare products, smoking, pollution, caffeine and alcohol can all leave your skin dehydrated, and the excess sebum can do nothing to alleviate this condition. In fact, stripping the oils from your skin will only result in more sebum production and further dehydration as the skin tries to protect itself and re-establish a healthy balance.
If your skin is oily but also displaying signs of dehydration (flakiness, tightness, itching, fine lines) then it may be time to take a look at the moisturiser you are using. You need to use a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser that can deliver hydration without clogging pores: Dermalogica’s Active Moist is ideal for daily use, combining Lavender, Mallow and Cucumber extracts to provide deep hydration. This lotion refines and smooths the surface of the skin, preparing it for make-up and for the day ahead.

Masques have come a long way since the days of those packs of brown clay that you would smear on and leave until your face looked like a patch of parched earth… Today’s masques are designed to address specific skin problems and can give your complexion a real boost.
Dermalogica Masques can:
• Restore levels of hydration and suppleness, reducing the appearance of fine lines. The Skin Hydrating Masque also repairs the damage caused by free radicals and soothes irritated skin, leaving it silky smooth and restoring a healthy glow.
• Repair and protect your skin from environmental damage. The Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque is packed with vitamins and botanical extracts which calm, hydrate and strengthen yours skin’s defences, leaving your complexion happier and healthier.
• Control sebum production and clear congested pores. If you have acne-prone skin, then the Sebum Clearing Masque could be your ticket to clearer skin! Excess sebum production is gently removed and controlled without stripping the skin of moisture, while the Salicylic Acid cleans deep into the pores, controlling spots and preventing future ones.
• Calm skin that is sensitised, irritated or inflamed. If you skin is uncomfortable and reactive, you may have had difficulty finding products that don’t make the situation worse. The UltraCalming Relief Masque can offer you much-welcome relief from the symptoms of irritated, highly-sensitive skin in the shape of an intensely soothing masque. It also strengthens your skin’s natural defences, making it better able to cope with our environment.
These masques are designed to be used between one and three times per week, depending on your skin’s needs. You can smooth one on while soaking in the bath, or pick up a book for ten minutes of relaxation which will leave your complexion rejuvenated and restored!

Many of us dread the appearance of fine lines on our faces; we associate those creases around the eyes or the mouth with the onset of ageing, as the skin begins to lose elasticity and volume. If you have noticed those lines on your own complexion, think about what exactly may be causing them before you start investing in ant-ageing products.
One reason for the appearance of fine lines is a lack of moisture in the skin. As the skin dries out, it loses moisture and volume and lines begin to form. You need to make sure therefore, that your skin is adequately hydrated before you start panicking about premature ageing.
The first step is to make sure you are drinking enough water. We all know we should be drinking 8 glasses a day, but can you say hand on heart that you do? You also need to avoid factors that contribute to dehydration, namely: caffeine and alcohol and hot environments. Smoking can also leave the skin gasping for a drink.
Then you need to take a look at the moisturisers you use:
• Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser every morning in order to restore moisture levels before you face the day ahead. Choosing one with added sun block will also protect your skin from the drying effects of the sun.
• Carry Antioxidant HydraMist with you and spray on during the day for intense hydration on the go.
• Go for a richer, more intense moisturiser at night that can repair any damage sustained during the day while providing a moisture boost to get you through the night.
• Use a moisture-boosting masque a couple of times a week for a restorative facial treatment.
As the skin is rehydrated, it will become ‘plumper’ and fine lines should be smoothed away, leaving you with great-looking skin.

You may be wondering why you would need to ‘pre-cleanse’ your skin, especially if you feel that your cleanser should do the job on its own. Pre-cleansing can, however, offer a number of benefits that make it a step you would find well worth your while to integrate into your skin care regime.
Dermalogica’s Precleanse is designed to prepare the skin for deep cleansing by dissolving make-up, sun cream, pollution and sebum. When you apply it to the skin, all the impurities on the surface are emulsified and can be rinsed away to leave your skin ready for the next step of cleansing deep into your pores.
Pores look and feel clearer, and the skin is softened, soothed and nourished, ensuring that it is in optimum condition for cleansing. If you have skin that is prone to congestion and blemishes, adding this simple step can help you to discover a clearer, much improved complexion.
Once you have rinsed away the Precleanse, follow it by cleansing your skin using your usual Dermalogica cleanser for a deep clean worthy of any skin care professional! Your skin will thank you for it and reward you with a radiant and above all healthy complexion you will not want to hide under layers of make-up!
